Liverpool signs Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen for record fee $156M

Liverpool signs Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for huge fee that could climb to $156 million (£116m).

A new addition to Liverpool After the Germany playmaker arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for a club record £116 million, Florian Wirtz says he wants to "win everything every year" at Anfield.

The 22-year-old had a physical at the club's training facility on Friday and signed a long-term contract with the Reds, believed to be for five years, keeping him on Merseyside until at least 2030.

With a guaranteed £100 million and an additional £16 million in add-ons, the deal surpasses Liverpool's previous club record of £75 million for the signing of Virgil van Dijk in 2018.

The £107 million Chelsea paid Benfica for Argentina player Enzo Fernandez in 2023 would be surpassed by Wirtz's move to Anfield, should those add-ons be completed.

Wirtz is Liverpool's second big summer acquisition and the team's second from the Bundesliga runners-up after Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong arrived for £29.5 million last month. Wirtz scored 57 goals in 197 Leverkusen outings.

In May 2020, at the age of 17, Wirtz made his top-flight debut for Bayer Leverkusen. Nineteen days later, he scored the most goals in Bundesliga history against the formidable Bayern Munich, who were also vying for his services this summer.

Since making his Bundesliga debut, Wirtz has contributed 44 assists in addition to his goal totals.

He is ranked third among all players during that period, but all of the other players in the top five are at least 29 years old, suggesting that Wirtz has a lot of room to grow.

The Premier League record for an initial fee was set when Chelsea signed Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for 106.7 million pounds ($131.4 million at the time) in 2023, before the London club agreed to pay up to 115 million pounds ($146 million at the time) for midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton later that year.

Wirtz has become a vital player for the German national team with 29 caps. He played all five of its matches at Euro 2024 on home soil.
