Unbelievable Comeback! Nigeria Stuns Morocco to Snatch 10th WAFCON Title in Final-Minute Thriller

Nigeria pulled off one of the most dramatic comebacks in Women’s Africa Cup of Nations history, rallying from two goals down to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 and capture a record-breaking 10th WAFCON title.

The Super Falcons looked dead and buried at halftime in Rabat. Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses had raced to a 2-0 lead with a beautifully curled strike from Ghizlane Chebbak and a scrappy finish by Sanaa Mssoudy, leaving the packed 21,000-seat Olympic Stadium buzzing.

But Nigeria had other plans.

Esther Okoronkwo ignited the comeback in the 64th minute, calmly converting a penalty after Nouhaila Benzina handled a cross from Folamide Ijamilusi. Just seven minutes later, Okoronkwo broke into the box again and squared it for Ijamilusi, who tapped in the equalizer and brought the Super Falcons roaring back to life.

Then, with just two minutes left on the clock, Okoronkwo played provider once more — this time setting up Jennifer Echegini, who coolly slotted home the match-winner to complete the comeback and send Nigerian fans into euphoria.

As the final whistle blew, the stadium fell into stunned silence — except for the jubilant Nigerian players, many of whom dropped to the ground in tears and celebration after completing what seemed like an impossible mission.

Their journey to the title was fittingly dubbed “Mission X”, and it ended in spectacular success. Nigeria now extends their WAFCON dominance with a perfect record in all 10 finals they’ve played in, reclaiming the crown they last held in 2018.

It’s a bittersweet ending for Morocco, who had gone all in for this tournament, bringing in 2023 Women’s World Cup-winning coach Jorge Vilda in hopes of claiming their first-ever WAFCON title. Instead, they now suffer the heartbreak of back-to-back final defeats.

Nigeria not only walks away with the trophy but also takes home a $1 million prize — double the amount from the previous edition — and becomes the first team to lift the redesigned WAFCON trophy.

Ironically, by the time FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF boss Patrice Motsepe arrived for the trophy presentation, much of the crowd had already made their exit.

This 2024 edition of the tournament had already faced delays due to scheduling conflicts, including Nigeria and Zambia’s commitments at the Paris 2024 Olympics, but in the end, it delivered a final fans won’t soon forget.

And Nigeria? They’re not just back — they’re back on top.
