Arsenal’s Saka out for ‘couple of weeks,’ says Arteta

Mikel Arteta has confirmed Bukayo Saka will miss only a few weeks after suffering another hamstring injury, though the Arsenal boss admitted it is a “big concern” given the winger has now had two hamstring issues in eight months.

Saka limped off during Arsenal’s win over Leeds and will miss Sunday’s trip to Liverpool, but he is expected back next month. The 23-year-old previously spent over three months out last season following surgery on his right hamstring, and this latest problem affects his left leg.

“He doesn’t need surgery. It’s not as bad as the previous one,” Arteta said. “But it’s obviously a big concern, especially for a player who relies on pace and explosiveness.”

Arsenal could be without up to seven players at Anfield, with Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz ruled out and doubts over Martin Ødegaard, Christian Nørgaard, Leandro Trossard and Ben White. Havertz has undergone minor knee surgery, while Ødegaard is battling a shoulder injury but may still be fit to play.

Looking ahead to the clash with defending champions Liverpool, Arteta said: “The favourite is always the one that won the previous year. Somebody has to take that crown away from them, and that’s what we’ll try to do.”
