Forest Replace Postecoglou After Nuno Exit
Ange Postecoglou has been named Nottingham Forest’s new head coach, replacing Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked after just three games of the new season.
Nuno’s 21-month spell ended with a 3-0 defeat to West Ham before the international break. He had guided Forest to safety after arriving in December 2023 and even delivered a seventh-place finish last season, securing European football for the first time in 30 years. But tension with owner Evangelos Marinakis and sporting director Edu left his position under pressure before the axe finally fell.
Postecoglou, 60, returns to management three months after leaving Tottenham. His two years in north London were turbulent: Spurs finished 17th in his final season, losing 22 league games, but he also delivered the club’s first major trophy in 17 years with a Europa League triumph over Manchester United. The win secured Champions League football, though it wasn’t enough to save his job.
Forest’s hierarchy believe his bold, attacking philosophy is the right fit for their ambitions. Marinakis praised his “proven record of winning trophies” and said he was the right man to help the club compete for silverware.
A Bold New Approach for Forest
Forest’s board believe his attacking style fits their ambition. Marinakis praised his “proven record of winning trophies” and said Postecoglou could help the club challenge for silverware. His philosophy is very different from Nuno’s: fast, aggressive football with high pressing and inverted full-backs. That could suit new signings like James McAtee, Douglas Luiz and Oleksandr Zinchenko, but it may expose defenders used to sitting deeper.
Divided Fan Reaction
Supporters are split. Some welcome the ambition; others fear his high-risk tactics, pointing to how Spurs nearly collapsed under him last season.
A Manager with Global Success
Postecoglou has won titles in Australia, Japan, and Scotland, including five trophies with Celtic, and now takes charge of his first Forest game away at Arsenal on Saturday. He is the club’s eighth permanent manager since Marinakis bought Forest in 2017.
