Iran Qualifies for the 2026 FIFA World Cup After Draw With Uzbekistan

Iran Punches Its Ticket to the 2026 World Cup, draw with Uzbekistan, aimed potential Trump travel ban.

Iranian football fans have reason to celebrate once again — the national team has officially secured its spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Amir Ghalenoei’s men booked their place after a thrilling 2-2 draw with Uzbekistan in Tehran on Tuesday, becoming the third nation to qualify for the expanded tournament.

Iran only needed a single point to guarantee qualification from Group A of the AFC qualifiers, and star striker Mehdi Taremi delivered when it mattered most. Twice, the Inter forward found the net to pull Iran level after goals from Uzbekistan’s Hojimat Erkinov and Abbosbek Fayzullaev threatened to spoil the party.

The result means Iran will head to its fourth consecutive World Cup — and seventh overall. They now join Japan and New Zealand as the first teams to qualify outside of the host nations, United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The 2026 tournament will make history as the first ever with 48 teams, offering more opportunities but also raising expectations. For Iran, the next step is clear: break past the group stage. Despite six previous appearances, Team Melli has never advanced to the knockout rounds. Their only three victories came against the United States in 1998, Morocco in 2018, and Wales in 2022.

Still, with a strong core of experienced players, a passionate fanbase, and momentum on their side, many believe this could finally be the moment Iran makes its mark on the world stage.
