Paraguay Qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

For the first time in 16 years, Paraguay will be at the FIFA World Cup. La Albirroja clinched their spot with a gritty 0-0 draw against Ecuador in Asunción, enough to send them through with a round to spare.

It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough. Paraguay needed only a draw, and in front of their home crowd, they delivered. This will be their ninth World Cup appearance, their first since South Africa 2010—when they reached the quarterfinals before bowing out to eventual champions Spain.

With Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Uruguay, and Colombia already qualified, Paraguay became South America’s sixth representative in the 2026 edition. The region is guaranteed six automatic spots under the expanded format, with a seventh potentially coming through an intercontinental playoff.

The next World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be the biggest ever with 48 teams. For Paraguay, just being back among them is already a victory.
