Qatar Beat UAE to Qualify for FIFA World Cup 2026
Qatar, who appeared at the 2022 World Cup as hosts, have secured their place in the 2026 edition via qualification for the first time.
A 2-1 victory over the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, highlighted by second-half headers from Boualem Khoukhi and Pedro Miguel, ensured Qatar topped Group A in the fourth round of Asian qualification. The UAE, finishing second, advance to the fifth round and playoffs, while Oman, who ended third, are eliminated.
Qatar’s best first-half chance came in the 30th minute when Mohamed al-Mannai’s header narrowly missed the UAE goal. Two minutes into the second half, Khoukhi opened the scoring with a header from Akram Afif’s free kick. With 17 minutes remaining, Afif provided another assist, crossing for Pedro Miguel to head home at the far post.
The win was briefly threatened when Tarek Salman received a straight red card in the 87th minute, reducing Qatar to 10 men. Eight minutes into added time, Sultan Adil pulled one back for the UAE, making for a tense finish. A draw would have been enough for the UAE to advance.
Meanwhile, fellow Asian qualifiers Japan and South Korea continued strong preparations with friendlies against South American teams. Japan overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat Brazil 3-2 in Tokyo, with Ayase Ueda scoring the decisive header in the 71st minute.
