Mbombela triumph secures Bafana Bafana’s return to football’s biggest stage
South Africa are heading back to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010, after a commanding 3–0 victory over Rwanda in Mbombela sealed top spot in Group C.
Goals from Thalente Mbatha and Oswin Appollis in the first half settled early nerves before Evidence Makgopa added a third midway through the second period, sending fans into wild celebration.
The result, combined with Nigeria’s 4–0 win over Benin—powered by a Victor Osimhen hat-trick—confirmed South Africa as group winners with 18 points, one ahead of the Super Eagles.
Coach Hugo Broos, who had urged his players to believe, praised their resolve after a turbulent qualifying run that included a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player.
“We all knew that we could do it,” said Broos. “We are going to the World Cup—it’s fantastic. The future looks very bright for South African football.”
It will be South Africa’s fourth World Cup appearance, following tournaments in 1998, 2002, and 2010.
Bafana Bafana will join Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Cape Verde as Africa’s confirmed representatives at the 2026 finals in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
