Iran Issues Major Demands to Participate in 2026 World Cup

Iran’s national football team has qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but its participation remains uncertain as the Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) has presented a list of strict conditions to the tournament’s co-hosts — the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

FFIRI’s Firm Stance

In an official statement, the FFIRI declared that Iran will “definitely” take part in the 2026 World Cup, but only if the host nations fully address its concerns.

  1. “We will participate in the World Cup tournament, but without any retreat from our beliefs, culture, and convictions,” the federation stated.

FFIRI President Mehdi Taj later confirmed that Iran has submitted 10 specific conditions that must be met before the team agrees to travel.

Key Iranian Demands

Visa Guarantees for IRGC Members: All players, coaches, and staff — particularly those who have served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) — must be granted visas without restrictions. This includes star players such as Mehdi Taremi and Ehsan Hajsafi.

National Symbols: Full rights to display Iran’s flag and play the national anthem during matches and official ceremonies.

Security: Significantly heightened security arrangements for the Iranian delegation throughout their stay in North America.

Respect for Cultural Values: Additional measures to respect Iranian cultural and religious beliefs during the tournament.

Background and Context

The demands come amid strained geopolitical relations. Earlier in 2026, the United States and Israel were involved in armed conflict with Iran. Additionally, Mehdi Taj was denied entry to Canada last month for a FIFA Congress due to his past affiliation with the IRGC, which is designated as a terrorist organization by both the U.S. and Canada.

Iran’s 2026 World Cup Schedule

Despite the ongoing dispute, Iran has already been assigned a training base in Tucson, Arizona. The team is drawn into a group stage featuring:

June 15: Iran vs New Zealand – Los Angeles

Iran vs Belgium – Los Angeles

Iran vs Egypt – Seattle

What Happens Next?

FIFA and the host nations have not yet issued an official response to Iran’s conditions. The situation remains fluid, with only weeks remaining before the tournament begins on June 11, 2026.
