Trump Called FIFA President to Overturn Folarin Balogun World Cup Suspension

Trump Lobbied FIFA President Infantino to Review US Star Folarin Balogun’s World Cup Suspension

President Donald Trump personally called FIFA President Gianni Infantino on July 1 to request a review of the controversial red card given to U.S. Men’s National Team striker Folarin Balogun, according to multiple sources.Balogun’s suspension was officially reversed on July 5, clearing the American star to play in the United States’ critical Round of 16 match against Belgium on July 6 in Seattle.

What Happened to Folarin Balogun?

Balogun, the USMNT’s top goal scorer at the 2026 World Cup, received a red card in the group stage match against Bosnia-Herzegovina after his foot landed on an opponent’s ankle. Many viewed the call as overly harsh. The initial suspension would have sidelined him for the Belgium matchup.Following Trump’s intervention and a review process, FIFA lifted the suspension.

Trump’s Call to Gianni Infantino

According to reports, President Trump contacted Infantino directly to “better understand” the red card decision and urged a review. The Trump administration also reportedly supplied additional evidence to support Balogun’s case, although no formal appeal was filed. After the suspension was overturned, Trump posted on Truth Social, thanking FIFA for “doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!”Trump and Infantino have maintained a close relationship over the past year, including multiple White House meetings and Infantino awarding Trump FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize.

FIFA’s Official Decision

FIFA stated the reversal was made in accordance with its Disciplinary Code and did not directly address Trump’s involvement. The organization invoked Article 27, which allows a disciplinary measure to be suspended for a probationary period of one year.

“If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced,” FIFA said.

This is not the first time FIFA has used this provision. A similar ruling previously allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to play in the 2026 World Cup.

Why This Matters for Team USA

Balogun’s availability is a major boost for the U.S. Men’s National Team as it faces Belgium in the knockout stage. As America’s leading scorer, his presence significantly increases the team’s chances of advancing in the 2026 World Cup.
