Mexico Defends Concacaf U-20 Title with 2-0 Win Over United States at Azteca

Mexico defeated the United States 2-0 in the Concacaf U-20 Championship final at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Sunday, August 9, 2026.The final was largely for pride. Both teams had already qualified for the 2027 U-20 World Cup. The United States secured a 2028 Olympic berth as host, while Mexico earned the other Concacaf spot by beating Canada in the semifinal.

How Mexico Won?


Mexico successfully defended the title it won in 2024. Atlante center back Cristóbal Alfaro scored both goals from set pieces.  The first came from a delivery on the left wing.  

The second followed a corner that U.S. goalkeeper Kayne Rizvanovich spilled, allowing Alfaro to finish. 

Controversial Red Card

Mexico again benefited from a controversial sending-off. Just before halftime, U.S. defender Chris Applewhite received a second yellow card after a VAR review of a tackle on Hugo Camberos. Despite limited apparent contact, Applewhite was dismissed, leaving the United States with 10 men for the second half.

The next FIFA U-20 World Cup will take place in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan in 2027.
