Wolves 3-4 Chelsea: Ten-man Blues survive thriller to advance

Wolves 3-4 Chelsea: Ten-man Blues survive late scare to reach Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Chelsea scraped into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after surviving a second-half Wolves fightback in a thrilling 4-3 win at Molineux.

Enzo Maresca’s men looked to have buried their recent frustrations early, racing into a 3-0 lead before halftime. Andrey Santos opened the scoring after just five minutes, slotting home from a clever Jamie Gittens pass. Gittens was at it again soon after, setting up Tyrique George for an easy tap-in, before Estevão capped a dominant half with a delicate chip following another Wolves defensive lapse.

The second half, however, was a completely different story. Wolves roared back through Tolu Arokodare’s stunning strike, then David Moller Wolfe pulled another back amid some nervy Chelsea defending.

The Blues’ task became harder when Liam Delap, making his return, was sent off for a second yellow after elbowing Yerson Mosquera.

Gittens seemed to have settled the contest with a brilliant half-volley in the 90th minute, but Wolves refused to quit — Wolfe struck again almost immediately to make it 4-3 and set up a tense finale.

Chelsea clung on through the closing moments to edge into the last eight, though their defensive frailties once again left plenty for Maresca to ponder.
